18th century sugar estate → Bel Ombre’s story dates back more than 250 years, when the region developed around sugarcane cultivation and estate life in southern Mauritius.

Frederica sugar mill → The historic mill once processed sugarcane grown across the estate. Its surviving ruins offer a glimpse into Mauritius’ colonial and agricultural past.

Estate expansion → Over time, the property grew into a vast landscape of plantations, forests, rivers, and mountain terrain covering around 2,500 hectares.

Shift towards conservation → Parts of the former estate were gradually protected to preserve native forests, endemic wildlife, waterfalls, and important natural habitats.
